Job Summary

Under general direction, manages and coordinates the daily activities of assigned law enforcement unit(s) within the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office; exercises supervision over lower level staff; ensures compliance with established laws, regulations and policies in order to achieve departmental goals and public expectations; reviews various procedures for current effectiveness and makes recommendations for change to meet present circumstances; reviews and verifies the accuracy and completeness of a variety of required reports and logs; drafts and issues various correspondence; administers and manages assigned grants; conducts technical training and provides guidance to subordinate staff in the resolution of incidents, investigations, and other related matters; attends meetings  for the purpose of information exchange and networking; and performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a variety of field and office settings and may require exposure to dangerous and life-threatening situations. Must be willing to carry a firearm; willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on-call, and holidays; work at any location in the County and travel on specific assignments.  

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Citizen of the United States (NM 4-41-10)

Completion of Police Academy Training and possession of a valid New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification. Other licenses and certifications may be required within a specified time period after hire.

Six (6) years of demonstrated law enforcement experience, two (2) years of which are in a lead or supervisory capacity in one or more functional areas that includes demonstrated experience and responsibility in area of assignment including staff supervision, policy/procedure compliance, training instruction and administration, and collaborative interagency relationships, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must not have received disciplinary action of a reprimand or greater for the 12 months preceding the closing date of an open Lieutenant’s position.

Successful completion of firearms annual qualification proficiency standards.

Ability to write intelligible and complete reports and deal with situations requiring tact, understanding, and good judgment; remain alert at all times and respond quickly in emergency situations; establish good working relationships courts, the general public, and other staff members.

Ability to listen, understand and communicate verbally and in writing in English.

Must successfully complete a mandatory physical exam, psychological exam, drug screen test, and background check; Must have no felony convictions or pending felony charges.

Must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

Ability to work outdoors exposed to all-natural weather conditions. 

May not have any DWI or DUI within the last five (5) years.

This position requires residing in Cibola County and the ability to comply with safety guidelines and policies of the County.
