Prescribed Fires planned for the Mt. Taylor Ranger District
Grants , NM, April 10, 2019 - Fire Managers are planning to execute the Redondo prescribed fire on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District, Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands, beginning in April or May. Prescribed fires are planned ignitions conducted under specific conditions to restore fire dependent ecosystems. They promote forest health in many ways such as reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients, and increasing habitat diversity. They are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority and will only be ignited under certain favorable weather and fuels conditions.
The Redondo Prescribed Fire area is approximately 3,800 acres in size. This treatment will promote forest health and provide protection to nearby communities. It will be a broadcast burn, meaning that hand ignitions will be used to ignite ground fuels over a widespread area within a clearly defined perimeter. The site is located approximately 14 miles west of Grants, NM, in the Zuni Mountains.
Every effort is made to minimize smoke impacts; however, smoke from prescribed fires is inevitable. Smoke will be monitored to assess potential health impacts and the Forest Service will coordinate with New Mexico Environment Department and Department of Health to issue any needed alerts. Smoke sensitive individuals are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found on the New Mexico Department of Health website at https://nmtracking.org/fire. If you have any questions, please contact Mt. Taylor Fire Management at 505-287-8833.
